FEMS European Materials Medal

The European Materials Medal is the most prestigious award of the Federation of European Materials Societies. Established in 1993, the European Materials Medal (Gold Medal) is awarded in recognition of outstanding contributions to the field of Materials Science and Engineering.

Rules

The Medal is presented at the biennial EUROMAT Conference, which is held in odd numbered years.

The Medal is to be awarded to still active materials scientists or engineers for distinguished contributions to Materials Science and Engineering in Europe.

Candidates for the award may be proposed by the

• Member Societies of FEMS,
• Executive Committee of FEMS,
• Award Selection Committee of FEMS.

The FEMS Secretariat will publish a call for proposals a year before the next EUROMAT Conference.

Nominations must be submitted to the FEMS Secretariat. Nominations (generally below the age of 60 at the time of proposal) are kept active for three consecutive years. The award shall not include posthumous selections. The nomination package should contain a CV and a list of publications (preferably accompanied by a list of independent citations), and a list of invited lectures. Also, a list of former PhD students and post-docs trained by the nominee should be included, indicating the positions presently held by those younger colleagues. Letters of support from at least three personalities in the field of MSE, familiar with the candidate’s achievements should be included with the nomination. A proposed citation of not more than thirty words should be submitted with the nomination. A nominee should preferably (but not exclusively) have European nationality or have done much of his/her research work at a European university or institute.

Responsibility for the selection of the recipient rests with the Award Selection Committee. The ASC will review nominations and propose one candidate to the Executive Committee (EC) not later than 6 months prior to the presentation of the award.

The recipient should be present at the awards event for appropriate recognition and present a lecture on his research at the EUROMAT Conference. He will be asked to publish a corresponding article in a European Materials Science Journal.

Award Selection Committee

Both the chairman and the two other members of the Awards Selection Committee are appointed by the FEMS Executive Committee for a period of up to four years.

FEMS Materials Science and Technology Prize

This prize is awarded to young European materials scientists or engineers in recognition of a significant contribution to a field of Materials Science and Engineering. The prize consists of a certificate and a selection of books from the highly-regarded WILEY-VCH catalogue of Materials Science and Technology publications.

Candidates for the award may be proposed by the

FEMS Lecturer Award for Excellence in MSE

This distinction encourages selected young materials scientists who have contributed significantly to a recently emerging topic of materials science and engineering to lecture throughout Europe as “ambassadors” of the materials community. The lectures serve two purposes: (i) to disseminate knowledge on important subjects; and (ii) expose the work of young researchers in Europe. Each FEMS Lecturer offers a specific talk with a corresponding abstract. The lectures are arranged in three different European countries. The Award consists of financing of the lecture tour by FEMS (up to a limit of € 1500) and a prize of € 1500 payable on completion of the tour.

Rules

The FEMS Lecturers - young European materials scientists - have distinguished themselves by the significance of their work and their ability to communicate effectively.

Two FEMS Lecturers are appointed every other year (in odd years to coincide with EUROMAT), covering different fields of Materials Science and Engineering.

Candidates for the award may be nominated by

• Member Societies of FEMS
• members of the Executive Committee of FEMS
• members of the Award Selection Committee.
• renowned materials scientists
• departments of MSE or similar branches of a University, or a research organisation

The FEMS Secretariat will publish a call for proposals one year before the next EUROMAT Conference.

Nominations must be submitted to the FEMS Secretariat. The nomination package should contain a CV and a list of publications (refereed/ non-refereed/ proceedings), preferably accompanied by a list of independent citations, and a list of invited lectures. One letter of support from a personality in the field of MSE, familiar with the candidate’s work but independent (i.e. no collaboration and no co-authorship), should be included with the nomination. The selected lecturer should be among the most promising of Europe’s young generation (age below 40) in the field of Materials Science and Engineering.

Responsibility for the selection of the recipient rests with the Award Selection Committee.

The award winner is expected to give a lecture at the award ceremony. Each award winner should also give two more lectures at University Institutes or renowned Research Institutes in different European countries, excluding his or her home country, during the year following the award.

Each FEMS Lecturer will be advised and supported in the preparation of the lecture tour by a Mentor, usually a member of the Executive Committee (EC), who will help in making contact with the relevant institutions. The Mentor informs the EC about the lecture tour. The recipient will publish an article based on his lecture in a European Materials Science Journal.

FEMS Materials Innovation Prize

The Federation of European Materials Science Societies (FEMS) bi-annually awards a Materials Innovation Prize (MIP) for distinguished scientists or engineers to recognise outstanding contributions to technological development and innovation based on exceptional contributions in materials science and engineering. The prize celebrates inventions and innovations that have favourable impact on quality of life of the individual as well as general welfare, sustainability, and environmental impact of the economy.

Criteria for the Prize are:

• Degree of innovation (excellence of the idea, inventive step)
• Market potential: perspectives for feasibility and application, R&D collaborations and technology transfer between institute and industry, patents, license and other contracts between institute and industry, spin-offs
• Publications and invited talks at conferences.

The Prize consists of a specially designed medal. It was established in 2008 and will be awarded for the first time in 2009.

Candidates for the award may be proposed by the

• Award Selection Committee of FEMS,
• Boards of companies that manufacture or apply advanced materials.

The FEMS Secretariat will publish a call for proposals a year before the next EUROMAT Conference.

Nominations must be submitted to the FEMS Secretariat. There is no age limit for nomination, but the award shall not include posthumous selections. The nomination package should contain a brief description of the respective contribution to Materials Science and Engineering to be recognised (maximum of 3 pages), a CV and a list of patents and publications. Also, a list of former PhD students and post-docs trained by the nominee should be included, indicating the positions presently held by those younger colleagues. Letters of support from two personalities who are familiar with the candidate’s achievements should be included with the nomination, at least one of them from a company. A proposed citation of not more than thirty words should be submitted with the nomination. A nominee should preferably (but not exclusively) have European nationality or have done much of his/her research work in Europe.
