Dr Brett Suddell is a Materials Scientist and Engineer specialising in natural materials, a Fellow of The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) and a Chartered Environmentalist. He is the founder and Director of BioBased Solutions Ltd, a natural materials consultancy which advises Industry, Governments and Academics on applications of natural materials along with event organisation and helps companies get access to funding as well as undertaking project management tasks. He has worked with clients including the Common Fund for Commodities, United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation and being an invited guest speaker at their intersessional meetings in Brazil and many others. He has a PhD and MRes sponsored by Rolls-Royce PLC in aerospace materials including titanium alloys and CMC's.

Brett is a keen supporter of professional institutions at a local, national and international level. Brett has served as the UK representative on FEMS (Federation of European Materials Societies) with over 20,000 members for 8 years and is currently the Vice President of this European organisation and President (from 1st January 2016) . He was a member of the Scientific committee for Euromat 2015 and the Area coordinator for Area E – Energy and the Environment. Brett has served as the Senior Vice President of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining and the Honorary Overseas Secretary, he has also served as a member of Council, the Managing Board, Chair of the Younger Members Committee, Materials, Minerals and Mining Strategy Commission, and member of the Local Affairs Board of IOM3 over a 12 year period. As well as being a trustee of IOM3 and the Institute of Packaging, he founded the Natural Materials Association and is a current board member of this UK based group. Brett is a Past President of the South Wales Materials Association and a past steering group member of Materials Network Wales, Welsh Composites Consortium and Construction Knowledge Wales.

He is also a member of the ESF pool of reviewers, Eurostars programme, InnovateUK and a reviewer for the Journal of Biobased materials and BioEnergy. A guest Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Biobased materials and BioEnergy and an editor of a special issue of the Journal of Green Materials in Spring 2016. Brett has written numerous papers, given invited Plenary and Keynote lectures and a book chapter on the applications of natural materials. He has also examined numerous PhD and Masters theses on the subject at Swansea University and the University of New South Wales, Australia.
