World Materials Day was celebrated on the 7 of November, in Portugal in an event organized by the SPM – Portugal Materials Society.

This year, the chosen place to hold this celebration was the Faculty of Engineering of Porto University (FEUP).
During the morning session we had the presentation of the thesis competing for Best Master Thesis in Materials Engineering award.

The celebration of the WORLD MATERIALS DAY 2018 will take place at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), on November 7. As usual since 2003, a competition, with prizes, is organized to distinguish the best theses on Science and Materials Engineering from finalist students of the 2nd cycle courses in Sciences and Engineering, including Polytechnic Institutes, for the academic years 2016-2017 and 2017-2018. Manuel Alonso won the 2nd prize of the FEMS Master Thesis Award in 2018, Budapest. Firstly, Manuel participated in the Spanish competition, as winner, he received from SOCIEMAT a budget for the travel expenses to the finals in Budapest.

Valérie Castellani, Thierry Chartier and Daniel Le Berre are winners of the 2018 French CNRS innovation medal. All three received this award at a ceremony on October 10 in Paris. Since 2011, the CNRS Innovation Medal has been awarded to individuals whose exceptional research has led to significant technological, economic, therapeutic and societal innovations. Of particular note for FEMS is the award to Thierry Chartier since he was also awarded the FEMS Innovation medal in 2017. Read more

Thomas Duguet, 34, is a CNRS researcher at the CIRIMAT laboratory (Toulouse, France) since 2012. He is engineer from the School of Mines (Nancy, FR), where he also achieved a master’s thesis in Materials Science and Engineering, with Dr. Thierry Belmonte.
