Aldo R. Boccaccini is Professor of Biomaterials and Head of the Institute of Biomaterials at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany. Prior to this he was Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Imperial College London, UK (2000-2009), where he is currently Visiting Professor of Materials. Boccaccini holds a MEng degree from Instituto Balseiro (Argentina), PhD (Dr-Ing.) from RWTH Aachen University (Germany) and Habilitation from Ilmenau University of Technology (Germany). The research activities of Prof. Boccaccini are in the broad area of glasses, ceramics and polymer/glass composites for biomedical, functional and/or structural applications. A current focus of his research is the processing and characterization of scaffolds for tissue engineering. He currently leads a group of > 40 researchers and has mentored and graduated > 30 PhD students and > 20 post-docs.
Boccaccini has received numerous international honours and awards, including the FEMS Materials Science and Technology Prize 2003. Most recently, he was awarded the Materials Prize of the German Materials Society (DGM) in 2015, the Turner Award of the International Commission on Glass (2016), the 2016 Pfeil Award of the UK Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining and the Friedberg Award and Lecture (2016) of the American Ceramic Society. In 2015, he was elected academician of the World Academy of Ceramics. Boccaccini is editor-in-chief of the journal Materials Letters and serves in the editorial board of > 10 international journals. He is the founding editor and first editor-in-chief of the journal "Biomedical Glasses". In 2015 he was elected member of the Council of the European Society for Biomaterials (ESB).
He also serves in the Review Panel of the German Science Foundation (DFG) and in the Engineering Panel of the European Research Council (ERC). He is international advisor to the Ministry of Science and Technology of Argentina. Boccaccini’s track record includes: > 800 publications, 15 book chapters and he has co-edited 6 books. He is Founder and Chairman of the International conferences series “Electrophoretic Deposition: Fundamentals and Applications”. In the last 5 years, he was in the organising committee of > 50 conferences.
