European Materials Day - Sociedade Portuguesa de Materiais

On the 2nd of November, at NOVA-FCT, Campus da Caparica, the celebration of another European Materials Day took place. This year, the theme chosen for the lectures was Materials in the Global Health Ecosystem, with three presentations of great interest. Rodrigo Martins (FCT NOVA) - Materials and the Challenges of the Future; João Conde (NOVA Medical School) - The Lanscape of Precision NanoMedicine at Nova Medical Research, and Cláudia Ranito (CEO of MedBone) - Turning Biomaterials into Medical Devices. The quality of what is done in Portugal in Materials Science and Engineering was evident in the theses, presented in the morning. The theses awarded were the follows: SPM Award 2022 Lara Castanheira FEUP-DEMec Production of sustainable powders for Direct Energy Deposition (DED) 1st SPM Honorable Mention Monica Ribeiro NOVA-FCT, DCM Development of new materials for CO2 conversion: Effect of Carbonization 2nd SPM Honorable Mention Francisco Tavares NOVA-FCT, DCM 3D Printed magnetic scaffolds for bone cancer theranostics and regeneration The thesis awarded with the SPM Prize will be presented at the EUROMAT 2023 conference, (Frankfurt, 3 to 7 September), to compete for the FEMS award to the best master thesis in Europe, won by SPM in 2018. The candidate's travel and accommodation will be funded by the SPM Prize.
